New funding opportunity for environmental projects
The latest round of the Llangattock Green Valleys CIC Community Fund is now open for applications. Grants of up to £2,000 will be available to constituted community groups (with a bank account) undertaking projects designed to deliver sustainable improvements to the environment of the Bannau Brycheiniog [Brecon Beacons National Park]. The total value of the fund this year is £12,000.
LGV was created in 2009 by a group of residents as a response to the climate emergency. Its aim is to harness local natural resources including water, wood fuel and solar power to help people save money and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. The organisation was incorporated as a Community Interest Company in May 2010. Shareholder members of LGV’s Micro-hydro Co-operatives raised funds to build six micro-hydro schemes, five of which were built and are now generating renewable electricity. The Community Fund arises from the early purpose of LGV CIC and profits made after interest payments to investors in the Micro Hydro Co-operatives. What kind of applications are we looking for? You’ll see that we ask you to set out how your proposal/project/group:
- Responds to the demands of the climate and nature emergency
- Protects the environment. For example, through reducing carbon emissions, enhancing or protecting nature and the environment, contributing to flood resilience
- Provides additional benefits to society, for example health and well-being, better transport, community cohesion and inclusiveness
- Provides value for money.
You will also need to describe what you do, evidence that your group can deliver, and describe the suitability of the organisation to fulfil the criteria set by LGV. We are unlikely to fund groups that have reserves of more than £5,000 unless there is an exceptionally good reason that is set out.
A panel will consider the submissions and select a portfolio of individually worthwhile projects whilst keeping a reasonable balance between the different kinds of projects we decide to fund. LGV is committed to responding to the demands of the climate and nature emergency and your application needs to demonstrate an understanding of this issue.
Last year, the successful projects included: providing volunteering opportunities in woodland management and educational outreach; a regenerative horticultural project in a primary school; purchase of litter picking equipment; and restoration of an overnight hiking shelter.
